For many organisations staff expertise, processes, software developments and
other types of knowledge lay undisturbed within databases, electronic documents,
archives and memories. This knowledge can be one of the most valuable assets
that an organisation has within its control. When it comes to exploiting the intellectual property owned by public sector
organisations, recent shifts in UK policy and regulation have created a climate
for change. Public sector organisations are now required to demonstrate that
they are maximising efficiencies and commercial opportunities for all their
assets on an ongoing basis (see Operational Efficiency Programme, Final Report
April 2009). Our Approach Amtec helps organisations to
understand and comply with this new landscape and unlock the potential value
from the intellectual assets they own. Our IP Consulting Service offers a wide
range of support, including: - Leadership Support - Our strategic commercial IP
consultants provide expert advice and strategic support to managers
using a wide range of techniques including mentoring, coaching,
brainstorming, workshops and briefing sessions to help identify and
manage cultural, intellectual or operational barriers to the
exploitation of IP assets.
- Strategic Scoping Study - Our study enables organisations
to understand and appreciate the nature and potential of their
intangible assets, to recognise that unlocking their value is consistent
with current public sector policies and to formulate an appropriate
commercial policy and intellectual asset management strategy.
- Intellectual asset audit - The purpose of the audit is to
provide a detailed review of intellectual assets. This can be completed
as a standalone exercise or as part of the Strategic Scoping Study. The
audit is used to identify those intangible assets that offer the most
commercial potential by capturing and recording the key metadata for
intellectual assets; achieved through a detailed review of intellectual
assets.
- Commercialisation support - Our consultants provide
practical, hands-on support to in-house teams to help set up processes
which ensure that intangible rights are established and protected by
selecting and preparing assets for exploitation, establishing processes
to support licensing, and formulating compliance and pricing policies.
Outcomes
- Clarification around the definition of intangible
assets.
- An identification and assessment of the potential value of the
intangible assets.
- An understanding of government accounting rules and governance
mechanisms, which are often perceived to militate against such
development.
- The development and nurture of routes and processes (e.g. tools,
skills and incentives) that support the cost-effective exploitation of
information assets.
- An understanding of the complexity and ambiguity around regulatory
and guidance frameworks that may inhibit effective exploitation.
Benefits of our approach These include: - helping to identify and manage cultural, intellectual or
operational barriers to the exploitation of IP assets.
- helping the organisation to understand and appreciate the nature
and potential of intangible assets, to recognise that unlocking their
value is consistent with current public sector policies, and to
formulate an appropriate commercial policy.
- identifying those intangible assets that offer the most commercial
potential by capturing and recording the key metadata for intellectual
assets.
- helping the organisation to set up processes which ensure that
intangible rights are established and protected by selecting and
preparing assets for exploitation, establishing processes to support
licensing, and formulating compliance and pricing policies.
